Professor of Diabetes

Professor Webb obtained his medical degree with intercalating first-class honours in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1998. His interest in Endocrinology began after studying in the pancreatic islet cell laboratories at the University of Aberdeen and continued with postgraduate clinical and research training in Nottingham, London and Leicester. His PhD work on screening contributed to national metabolic disease risk stratification policy.

After completing an NIHR training lectureship and becoming a consultant in Diabetes medicine, Professor Webb’s career trajectory has been defined by his dedication to research and training in equal measure. As a clinical academic and recognised expert in Type 2 Diabetes and obesity linked cardiovascular disease prevention, he has extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams, including as principle investigator of trials, implementation science and service evaluation projects, course director of under- and postgraduate programmes, HEI external examiner and clinical lead for complex diabetes and specialist weight management services.

He has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 48) and attracted significant funding for experimental medicine research from various sources, including the NIHR, Diabetes UK and industry. He has supervised over 15 PhD, MD or MSc students, many of whom have become leaders in their fields. Professor Webb’s commitment to teaching and research excellence is exemplified by his directorship of a highly successful MSc in clinical diabetes. Developed from the ground up, this programme is specifically designed to meet the needs of contemporary professional learners and has demonstrated global reach. His vision is to make a real difference in the fight against metabolic disease by combining ground-breaking research and innovative education.
