Diabetes Self Management Alliance (DSMA)

  • The DSMA was formed in Leicester in September 2015 and has delivered Annual Conferences in Copenhagen (2016), Galway (2017), Glasgow (2018) Stockholm (2020), Belfast (2022) and this years conference Leicester (2024). Up to 100 people have attended each Conference

  • The focus of the Annual Conference has been to update people on different and new ways of promoting self-management based on the research evidence. A mix of plenaries and workshops have been delivered with involvement of people living with diabetes in shaping and delivering the programme.

  • Topics have included: involving people living with diabetes in service design and research, using digital tools and social media to promote self-management, accreditation of diabetes self-management education programmes and tools and techniques to support and maintain behaviour change and peer-support.

  • A conference about self-management and structured education needs to role-model different styles of delivery so that attendees have the opportunity to experience these approaches.

  • Just as important as the content, is how it is to be delivered to the intended audience and this is where the workshops as part of this conference facilitate different approaches to learning .

DSMA is a collaboration of the following institutions:
