Kamlesh Khunti
Professor of Primary Care Diabetes and Vascular Medicine
Biography
Professor Khunti leads a programme of work on cardiometabolic diseases and multiple long-term conditions (MLTC). He was recently appointed as Director of the first National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Global Health Research Centre for Multiple Long-Term Conditions and Co-lead for the Cross NIHR Collaboration for Multiple Long-Term Conditions.
He is the national NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) East Midlands Lead for Multi-morbidity and leads the national training programme for MLTCs. He has led a programme of work during the Covid-19 pandemic and is a member of the UK Government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) and Chair of the SAGE Ethnicity Sub-panel.
Professor Khunti has published over 1400 peer-reviewed articles. He is Chair of the American Diabetes Association Therapeutic Inertia Initiative and is currently a Member of the KDIGO Diabetes and CKD Guidelines, as well as a Member of the ADA Standards of Care Guidelines for Diabetes. He has won numerous awards both nationally and internationally including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Award for Excellence in Medical Research, India and the Diabetes UK Arnold Bloom Award.
He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2022 New Year’s Honour’s List for services to health.

Professor Khunti's research interests encompass cardiometabolic disease, the prevention of multimorbidity and cardiometabolic conditions, risk assessment tools, ethnic minority health, real-world evidence, and randomised controlled trials.
