Leicester Diabetes Centre experts to showcase world-leading research at EASD 2025

Ten leading experts from the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) will present their latest research at the 61st Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), taking place in Vienna, Austria, from 16–19 September. 

EASD is one of the world’s most influential diabetes research conferences, attracting thousands of clinicians and scientists each year. The strong presence of LDC experts reflects the Centre’s reputation as a globally recognised hub of excellence in diabetes research, education, and innovation. 

As the UK’s largest clinical diabetes research centre and one of only three International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centres of Excellence in Europe, LDC continues to shape the global diabetes agenda. Our researchers will be presenting cutting-edge work across a wide range of topics, from type 1 and type 2 diabetes management, pregnancy and diabetes, new treatments and technologies, to risk factors and long-term complications.

Tuesday 16 September 

  • Prof Kamlesh Khunti – Chair, OP 02 Novel risk factors for type 2 diabetes (Paris Hall, 10:00–11:30) 

  • Malak Hamza – Prevalence and screening for glucokinase monogenic diabetes amongst women diagnosed with gestational diabetes in a large ethnically diverse hospital population (Station 01, 12:00–13:00) 

Wednesday 17 September 

  • Prof Claire Meek – Obesity +/- diabetes “peri”-pregnancy – After Pregnancy (London Hall, 09:10–09:30) 

  • Prof Melanie Davies – REDEFINE 2 trial of semaglutide and cagrilintide (Vienna Hall, 09:45–10:00) 

  • Erica Richardson & Prof Pratik Choudhary – Competency framework for diabetes technologies (Spotlight Stage, 09:45–10:15) 

  • Prof Claire Meek – Chair, Mortality in type 2 diabetes (Station 02, 11:45–12:45) 

  • Vaios Koutroukas – Hypo-METRICS study on hypoglycaemic events (Station 15, 11:45–12:45) 

Thursday 18 September 

  • Prof Melanie Davies – Chair, multiple sessions including GLP-1 therapies, semaglutide abstracts, and tirzepatide in paediatric diabetes 

  • Dr Jonathan Goldney – Age at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and physical activity (Station 03, 12:45–13:45) 

  • Israel Podesta – Impact of acute aerobic exercise after bariatric surgery (Station 13, 12:45–13:45) 

  • Malak Hamza – Physical function outcomes in people with type 2 diabetes (Warsaw Hall, 15:30–16:30) 

Friday 19 September 

  • Dr Francesco Zaccardi – Chair, Old risk factors for cardio-renal complications (Milan Hall, 10:00–11:00) 

  • Professor Pratik Choudhary will also present at the International Hypoglycaemia Study Group (IHSG) Satellite Symposium, Hypoglycaemia in the CGM era: Is what matters measured, and does what’s measured matter? (08:30-10.00)
