POET
Study title
Background
Use of Point Of carE Testing (POET) for monitoring and management of long-term conditions (LTCs): A validation and feasibility study
There is a general drive towards an increased use of technology and innovation in healthcare including virtual consultations, electronic heath recording and the use of remote monitoring tools for the management of people with long-term conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. It is anticipated that this may improve patient experience and free-up clinic time. With these rapid advances in telemedicine and increasing use of technology in healthcare in general, there is consequently an emerging need to explore and consolidate existing options for remote blood testing for chronic conditions like diabetes.
The aim of the study is to validate point of care testing, using capillary samples collected via finger-prick technique and then to assess the impact of this technique on service users and clinical pathways including understanding participant experiences and thoughts around remote testing.
Study aims
This is a prospective observational study. Participants with or without long term conditions will undergo both venous and capillary blood sample collection in the clinical setting for the validation phase. A subset of participants will be sent an ‘at home’ testing kit and questionnaire for the feasibility phase of the study.
