LDC launches podcast bringing diabetes research to life

The Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) has launched its very first podcast, designed to share diabetes research in a way that’s accessible and practical. The opening series shines a spotlight on the M3 study.

Spotlight on M3 study findings

The M3 study is testing a new type of care that has been specifically designed for young adults (aged 16–45 years) with type 2 diabetes. Funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), it focuses on the things that matter most to them, making sure their care is tailored to their individual needs.

This podcast series will:

  • Translate complex information from research into accessible conversations that individuals can use to support their own diabetes management.

  • Highlight the unique challenges and wider health, social, and economic issues related to early onset type 2 diabetes, ultimately raising awareness and understanding.

  • Share first-hand insights from researchers, clinicians, and experts on early onset type 2 diabetes, exploring emerging topics such as pregnancy and the use of new technologies.

The first episodes feature conversations with researchers, clinicians and people with lived experience, helping to translate the results of the M3 study into real-world insights.

  • Episode 1: Emotional and psychological wellbeing when living with diabetes; Speakers: Dr Sarah Gunn and Dr Malak Hamza.

  • Episode 2: Diabetic foot disease; Speakers: Dr Rachel Berrington and Dr Matt Savage

  • Episode 3: Stepping into better health; Speakers: Dr Louisa Herring and Dr Tommy Slater

These discussions make complex evidence easier to understand and highlight how research can support better care and decision-making.

Bringing research to life beyond journals

The LDC podcast is part of our mission to connect evidence with practice. Instead of sitting in academic papers, findings are shared in an accessible format that can be listened to anytime, anywhere.

Professor Melanie Davies, Co-Director of the Leicester Diabetes Centre, said:

“Our research has the greatest impact when it reaches the people who can use it. This podcast allows us to share evidence in a format that’s easy to access, whether you’re commuting, exercising, or in between clinics.”
