Leicester Diabetes Centre experts to speak at international diabetes conference

Six diabetes experts from Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) will be presenting at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) annual meeting in Madrid, Spain, from 9-13 September 2024. 

Diabetes is a growing healthcare issue. It is estimated that around 422 million people live with diabetes globally, and approximately 1.5 million deaths are directly attributed to Diabetes each year*. This is expected to rise to about 643 million people living with diabetes by 2030 **. 

The EASD annual conference offers the opportunity for leading diabetes researchers and clinicians, including experts from LDC, to network and stay up to date with recent developments in the diabetes field. It provides an interface between science and clinical practice where key discussions take place to move the field forward. 

LDC is world renowned for its pioneering research and comprehensive approach to diabetes management and education. Our experts are leaders in their field and will bring a wealth of expertise to the conference. 

Professor Melanie Davies CBE, Professor of Diabetes Medicine, and Co-Director of LDC will be presenting two talks at the conference, the first titled: ‘Implications for clinical care’ on 10th September at 5.55pm in the Berlin Hall.  

The second talk is titled: ‘STEP HFpEF DM a deep dive into metabolic outcomes’ taking place on 13th September at 2.30pm in the Sofia Hall. 

Professor Kamlesh Khunti, Professor of Primary Care Diabetes & Vascular Medicine and Co-Director of LDC is chairing the ‘Incretin-based therapies and metabolic insights in diabetes’ session in the London Hall on 11th September and will also be presenting two talks.  

The first talk is titled: ‘Benefits of early glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes’ taking place at 12.20pm on 10th September in the Retiro Hall. 

The second talk is titled: ‘Why registries?’ and is scheduled to start at 2.05pm on 11th September in the Retiro Hall. 

Professor Sam Seidu, Professor in Primary Care Diabetes and Cardio-metabolic Medicine will be presenting a talk titled: ‘Cardiovascular effectiveness of newer glucose-lowering agents, with and without baseline lipid-lowering therapy in type 2 diabetes: a systematic meta-analysis of cardiovascular outcome trials and real-world evidence’ on 9th September at 10.20am in the Retiro Hall. 

Professor Seidu will also chair the session titled: ‘Prospective study to evaluate individual effects on the relationship of glucose and HBA1c: design, results, and clinical implication’ on 13th September at 9am in the London Hall.  

Professor Pratik Choudhary, Professor and Honorary Consultant in Diabetes is a panelist at ‘The EASD e-Learning expert session: Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) in type 2 diabetes’ on 10th September from 1.45pm in the Cairo Hall. 

Professor Choudhary will also be presenting two further talks, the first titled: ‘Has novel technology solved issues with impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia?’ on 12th September at 5.20pm in Retiro Hall.  

The second talk is titled: ‘Clinical implications of the GDAC study and future research’ on 13th September from 9.40am in the London Hall 

Professor Claire Meek, Professor of Chemical Pathology and Diabetes in Pregnancy for LDC, will chair a session on 12th September at 10.45am in the Cairo Hall titled: ‘Causes and consequences of gestational diabetes.’  

Professor Meek will also deliver a talk during this session titled: ‘The effect of a reduced energy diet upon maternal weight and pregnancy outcomes in women with gestational diabetes: the DiGest trial.’ 

Doctor Petra Jones, Senior Research Associate and EDEN education support manager, will present a talk titled: ‘Impact of remote foot temperature monitoring for at-risk feet’ on 12th September at 2.30pm in the Retiro Hall.
