Swansea man to skydive for diabetes research
Mark Walters, 47, will be taking to the skies above his home city of Swansea, Wales, for a daring skydive to raise money for diabetes research at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC).
Diabetes research is a cause close to Mark’s heart. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes a couple of years ago, his father lives with type 1 diabetes, and his partner’s father sadly passed away from diabetes-related complications in 2016.
“Diabetes has affected my life and my family in so many ways, so supporting the incredible work at Leicester Diabetes Centre feels really important,” explains Mark. “If this jump helps make even a small difference, it'll be worth every second of the nerves!"
Mark will be joined by his partner’s daughter, Keira, for the parachute jump in October, on her 16th birthday. He aims to raise £1,000 to support ongoing research at LDC into better treatments for people with diabetes.
Opened in 2012, the LDC is now the largest clinical research facility for diabetes in the UK. It is led by two of the world’s top ten diabetes experts, Professors Melanie Davies and Kamlesh Khunti.

The Centre is built on a strong partnership between the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL) and the University of Leicester (UoL). As a recognised leader in diabetes education, LDC is dedicated to equipping healthcare professionals and individuals with the knowledge and tools to improve outcomes for people living with, or at risk of, diabetes and other long-term conditions.
