LDC experts to share latest research at EASD 2026

Experts from the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC) will attend the 62nd Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), taking place from Monday 28 September to Friday 2 October 2026 in Milan, Italy.

This global diabetes conference will convene thousands of delegates from across the globe to explore the latest advancements in diabetes research, treatment, and care.  

The EASD 2026 programme will feature hundreds of presentations, including keynote lectures, symposia, and oral sessions, offering insights into cutting-edge developments in both basic and clinical diabetes research. 

Globally recognised for its excellence in diabetes research, education and innovation, LDC is the UK’s largest clinical diabetes research facility and one of only six International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centres of Excellence in Europe.  

LDC experts will be contributing to EASD 2026 across lectures, oral presentations, panel discussions, and symposia. Below is a full overview of the sessions involving contributions from LDC colleagues.

Day 2 - Tuesday 29 September

10.00 - 11.00 | Spotlight Stage | Early combination vs stepwise therapy: rethinking diabetes treatment

Professor Samuel Seidu, an invited speaker to EASD 2026, is one of two speakers for this session and will focus on ‘Stepwise intensification: when less may be more’.

12.00 - 13.00 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Young-onset diabetes across the globe 

Dr Jonathan Goldney will present a short oral discussion about ‘Age at diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and neurodiversity: a cross-sectional analysis’.

12.00 - 13.00 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Life and death in diabetes: predicting the ultimate outcome

Dr Goldney will also present an oral presentation on ‘Rethinking obesity classification: mortality risk using the 2025 Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Consensus definition compared to a pragmatic BMI-based approach’.

12.00 - 13.00 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Exercise, diet, and sleep 

Professor Tom Yates, an invited speaker to EASD 2026, will chair a series of short oral discussions on this topic.

14.30 - 16.00 | Oslo Hall | ExPas SYMPOSIUM: Exercise in women with diabetes across the reproductive life course - Where are we? 

Professor Claire Meek, an invited speaker to EASD 2026, will present 'A call to action: A consensus statement on knowledge gaps and research priorities on the management of women with early onset type 2 diabetes in the preconception, pregnancy and postnatal periods'.

15.00 - 15.45 | Arena | Delphi consensus on disease modification in type 2 diabetes 

Professor Kamlesh Khunti, LDC Co-Director, will chair this session. Professor Khunti is a member of the EASD and EAFD (European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes) Board.

16.45 - 17.45 | Milan Hall | 41st Camillo Golgi Lecture - Changing the course of diabetes: from metabolic risk to organ protection 

Professor Kamlesh Khunti will chair this lecture.

18.00 - 18.30 | Arena | Early combination therapy in type 2 diabetes: harmonizing glycemic control and cardiorenal protection

Professor Kamlesh Khunti will co-chair and introduce this session.

18.00 - 19.00 | Berlin Hall | The earlier, the longer, the better in diabetes management 

Professor Dame Melanie J Davies DBE, LDC Co-Director and an invited speaker to EASD 2026, will co-chair and introduce this session. 

Day 3 – Wednesday 30 September

8.30 - 9.30 | London Hall | Disease modifying drug use in type 2 diabetes: barriers and progress 

Professor Dame Melanie J Davies DBE will speak in this session, focusing on ‘Patterns in the UK and Europe’. 

11.45 - 12.45 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Cardiovascular considerations 

Dr Jonah Thomas will present a short oral discussion on ' A stratified analysis of an emulation of the LEADER trial using electronic health records (CPRD)'. 

12.00 - 12.45 | Arena | GLP-1 RAs: equitable health for women across the lifecourse 

In this session, Professor Claire Meek will speak about ‘Incretin therapies in women with diabetes: preconception, pregnancy and postnatal use’.  

13.00 - 14.00 | Short Oral Discussion Area | SGLT inhibitors: renal, cardiac and tolerability outcomes 

Dr Emily James will present a short oral discussion on 'Impact of exercise training and dapagliflozin on physical function in type 2 diabetes: the Dapagliflozin, Exercise Training and physicAl function (DETA) randomised controlled trial'. 

14.30 - 16.00 | London Hall | Hypoglycaemia beyond glucose numbers 

Dr Jonah Thomas will deliver a presentation on 'Impaired awareness of hypoglycaemia does not affect the frequency or duration of sensor detected hypoglycaemic episodes at different glucose values'. 

16.30 - 17.30 | London Hall | CGM in type 2 diabetes EASD guideline 

Professor Dame Melanie J Davies DBE will co-chair this session and will speak about ‘Introduction, rationale, and methods’. 

16.45 - 17.30 | Arena Hall | From postdoc to PI: navigating the path to your independent lab 

Professor Claire Meek will speak in this session, explaining ‘How to get an independent lab from scratch, being a physician?’. 

Day 4 - Thursday 1 October

8.30 - 10.00 | Oslo Hall | IHSG SYMPOSIUM: Implications of Hypoglycaemia Definitions for Clinical Trial Outcomes 

Professor Pratik Choudhary, an invited speaker to EASD 2026, will speak about 'Defining non-severe hypoglycaemia' and take part in a panel discussion. 

9.30 - 10.15 | Vienna Hall | Early-onset type 2 diabetes: the RESET for REMISSION trial and the role of exercise 

Professor Tom Yates will speak about the ‘RESET for REMISSION trial results: impacts on cardiorespiratory fitness, muscle’. 

10.45 - 12.15 | Warsaw Hall | Nine months, many layers: novel dimensions of diabetes in pregnancy 

Professor Claire Meek will deliver an oral presentation about ‘Low carbohydrate diets, nutritional adequacy, glycaemia and perinatal outcomes in women with gestational diabetes’.

12.30 - 14.00 | Oslo Hall | PCDE SYMPOSIUM Transforming Diabetes Care from the Front Line: Global Perspectives, Evidence and Action 

Professor Samuel Seidu will chair and introduce this session, which will include a presentation from Professor Kamlesh Khunti on 'Diabetes Mellitus and the Role of Primary Care - A Global Perspective'. Both speakers will then take part in a panel session on ' What Can We Learn from Each Other? Shared challenges, transferable solutions and a call to action for global primary care diabetes'. 

12.45 - 13.45 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Heterogeneity and cardiovascular outcomes in type 2 diabetes 

Professor Samuel Seidu will present a short oral discussion on ‘Insulin treated adults with type 2 diabetes have substantially higher healthcare utilisation and two-fold higher hospital costs: observational evidence from linked CPRD-HES data in England’. 

14.00 - 15.00 | Vienna Hall | EASD e-Learning expert session: Hypoglycaemia 

Professor Pratik Choudhary will be a panellist for this discussion. 

14.00 - 15.00 | Short Oral Discussion Area | Across time and space: national trends in outcomes and risk 

Sophie Elsoueidi will present a short oral discussion on ‘24-hour accelerometer-derived behavioural rhythm metrics and their associations with glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes’. 

17.00 - 17.30 | Spotlight Stage | Introducing libre duo: a new era in diabetes sensing technology 

Professor Pratik Choudhary will speak in this session.

Day 5 - Friday 2 October

09.30 - 10.00 | Arena | Advancing clinical practice with CGM: evidence, education, and system level implementation 

Professor Pratik Choudhary will chair this session and take part in the discussion, as will Professor Samuel Seidu.

13.00 - 14.00 | London Hall | ADA/EASD consensus report on management of type 2 diabetes 

Professor Dame Melanie J Davies DBE will co-chair this session and will speak about ‘Introduction, methods, and the rationale, importance, and context of glucose-lowering treatment’.
