The Centre’s pioneering research on the prevention of Type 2 diabetes has led to it being selected as a provider, together with public sector contract specialist Ingeus, for NHS England’s Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP).

The approach has been based on one of the Centre’s group education programmes, called Let’s Prevent, which has been developed on the back of a £2m, five-year NIHR research grant.

Let’s Prevent is becoming one of the first interventions in the UK to demonstrate how a structured educational programme can reduce the number of people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes. The initiative has been so successful that those people who attended the entire programme are now 80 per cent less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes.

It was originally piloted across two Leicestershire towns, where 3,000 people at high risk of Type 2 diabetes were targeted. It covered the risks and implications of developing the condition, as well as how to make lifestyle changes to prevent its progression.

The findings of the study and pilot helped the Centre and Ingeus become part of the NDPP, giving both organisations the opportunity to work with health services in England and change the long-term health of the nation.

Locally across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, Xyla Health and Wellbeing are the Provider of the Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme. This Prevention Programme consists of either group based sessions or one to one digital support delivered by specially trained health and wellbeing coaches.
