PROPELS

The PRomotion Of Physical activity through structured Education with differing Levels of ongoing Support for those with pre-diabetes (PROPELS)

study title:

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a disease where glucose levels (sugar) in the blood become higher than usual and accounts for 80-90% of people with diabetes. When blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as having diabetes this is known as non-diabetic hyperglycaemia or ‘pre-diabetes’. Studies have shown that if people with pre-diabetes make changes to their lifestyle (food and activity), they may slow down or prevent the onset of T2D.

background

The study aims to investigate whether a structured education programme with differing levels of ongoing support, including text-messaging, can increase physical activity over a 4-year period in a multi-ethnic population at high risk of diabetes.

study aims

This is a multi-centre randomised controlled trial (RTC) comparing two different physical activity interventions with a control condition. Participants with non-diabetic hyperglycaemia were randomly allocated to one of three groups : a control group (received an advice leaflet), an intervention group who attended the Walking Away from Diabetes group education programme followed by three annual refresher sessions, and a second intervention group who attended the group sessions and in addition received ongoing support during the study in the form of interactive text-messages and two telephone calls a year. The primary outcome is step count measured at 48-month post-intervention. The study recruited in two centres (Leicester and Cambridge), with the aim of 66% of recruitment coming from Leicester, to ensure a multi-ethnic sample of participants.

study summary

The study successfully recruited to target and collection of the 48-month follow-up data is complete. Study data are currently being analysed and a paper is being prepared for publication.

study progress

The study is funded by National Institute for Health Research HTA Programme and is run in collaboration in with the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge.

The study was sponsored by University of Leicester.
